Fostering Holistic Development at GD Goenka School:-
At GD Goenka School, fostering holistic development among students is a top priority. In line with this vision, a unique integrated activity was organized where children engaged in baking cakes. This activity was designed to not only teach culinary skills but also integrate various subjects, providing a comprehensive learning experience.
OBJECTIVE:
The primary objective of this activity was to provide students with hands-on experience in baking while integrating concepts from different subjects such as Mathematics, Science, and Language Arts. By combining practical skills with theoretical knowledge, the aim was to enhance students’ understanding and application of these subjects in real-life scenarios.
ACTIVITY DETAILS:
The baking activity took place in the school’s well-equipped kitchen facilities under the guidance of experienced culinary instructors. Students were divided into groups, each responsible for preparing a specific type of cake. The activity was structured as follows:
PREPARATION PHASE:
Students were introduced to the basics of baking, including safety measures, ingredient measurement, and recipe comprehension. This phase incorporated concepts of Mathematics, as students had to accurately measure ingredients using standard units and fractions.
EXECUTION PHASE:
Under the supervision of teachers, students applied their knowledge to execute the baking process. They learned about the chemical reactions involved in baking, linking the activity to concepts of Science such as leavening agents, heat transfer, and states of matter.
DOCUMENTATION AND REFLECTION:
Throughout the activity, students were encouraged to maintain journals documenting their experiences. They recorded observations, challenges faced, and reflections on the integration of subjects. This phase promoted Language Arts skills by enhancing students’ writing and communication abilities.
PRESENTATION:
After the cakes were baked, students presented their creations to their peers and teachers. This provided an opportunity for them to showcase their teamwork, creativity, and presentation skills.
