Annual Sports day meet of GD Goenka Public School ‘Sport-A-Thon’ held at KD Singh Babu Stadium. If there is one field of life which teaches us the most valuable lessons about perseverance, patience and perfect character, it is sports. On the 23 of December 2022, G.D Goenka Public School organized its Annual Sports Day ‘Sport-a-Thon’. After a hiatus of two years due to the lingering fear of the COVID-19 pandemic, the school organized the event at a grand scale at KD Singh Babu Stadium. ‘Sport-a-Thon’ embodies the zeal, talent and spirit of sportsmanship of the students of GD Goenka Public School, encouraging them to be persistent and refine their talents; achieving the greatest of heights. The event was marked with awe-inspiring grandeur and opulence, filled with some nail-biting moments by nearly 1000 students, who put their heart and soul into the athletics and various mass drills that took place.
The most anticipated event of the year commenced with the arrival of the highly distinguished Chief Guest, honourable Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Shri Brijesh Pathak, Guest of Honour MLC Shri Awaneesh Singh. The event was graced by the presence of District Magistrate Lucknow City Shri Surya Pal Gangwar, Principal Secretary Shri Jitendra Kumar, State Editor of Hindi daily Dainik Jagran Shri Ashutosh Shukla, BJP State President Smt Priyanka Rawat, senior IAS Shri Rajendra Pensia, and the core committee members of Sahodaya Schools’ Complex Lucknow. and several other dignitaries. The Chairman, Mr. Sarvesh Goel and the Principal, Dr Prerna Mitra welcomed the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour. A memento was presented as a token of gratitude to the Chief Guest by the Chairman, Mr. Sarvesh Goel.
The programme for the day commenced with a fabulous display of Inter-House March Past, a highly competitive event where all four Houses eyed first place. The march past which was led by the pipe band of our school showcased the discipline of all four Houses Tagore, Teresa, Radhkrishnan and Vivekanand, where they marched together as a team being led by the members of the Student Council and the Head Boy Karan Agarwal. The synchronized movements, the crisp commands, and the zeal and enthusiasm of the students marching in perfect symphony were a sight to behold.
After the march passed, pledge taking ceremony took place with the School Sports Captain Suyanshi Singh, pledging to uphold the honour and the spirit of true sportsmanship. Following the pledge was the lighting of the torch by all the House Sports captains led by the Head Boy, Karan Agarwal. The Sports Day was declared open by the Chief Guest by releasing colourful balloons to mark the expression of joy.
Art and culture have been an integral part of India since ancient times. Traditional dances are among the most prominent cultural heritage passed down through generations, displaying not only aesthetic brilliance but also captivating stories. The mesmerising performance of hundred & twenty hands, the Bodhitsva Dance which included intricate fingers, feet movements and expressive facial expressions with beautiful costumes and long artificial nails left the audience spellbound. About 50 students from classes VI to XI performed this fusion dance with beautiful costumes and colourful fans and wings.
After the Inaugural Dance, the Principal, Dr Prerna Mitra extended a formal welcome to the Chief Guest and the other dignitaries and shared the Annual report of the School’s Sports activities and the achievements of students. A PowerPoint presentation was shown to the audience to showcase the various activities held during the session.
Following the Principal’s report, the school choir presented a melodious medley of songs and instrumental music with the message of strength, motivation, energy and courage to achieve goals in life named ‘Harmony’. The impressive performance by the School Choir which had students from classes III-XII enthralled the audience.
The programme proceeded with Inter House track events, 200 metre Dash for Boys and Girls from classes IX-XII. All participants showcased impressive skills, while the onlookers gazed in amazement at the neck-and-neck competition. The winners for the 200-metre dash were Shashank Singh and Arya Tripathiwho bagged the first position in the boys’ and girls’ categories.
The audience was in for a visual treat as about 90 students from Middle School performed the Taekwondo Fusion Dance. The power-packed kicks and punches were intertwined beautifully with the music. The wonderful self-defence technique was fascinating where the students performed on the foot-thumping beats and mesmerised the audience.
The second set of Inter House track events followed the Taekwondo fusion dance which included 50 metre Dash for classes III – V Boys and Girls, 100 Metre Dash for classes VI – VIII Boys and Girls and lastly 100 metre Dash for classes IX – XII Boys and Girls.
In 100 metre Dash VI-VIII Boys’, the first position was bagged by Pragun Gupta. In 100 metre Dash, VI-VIII Girls’ first position was bagged by Kavya Gupta. In IX- XII 100 metre Dash Boys’ the first position went to YashKewlani. In Girl’s category, the first position went to Ayelen Lopez Cavalcante.
Following the track event, about 90 students from III to V performed rhythmic Yoga and Bharatanatyam which featured a series of poses and movements from the ancient Indian dance, combined with the breath control and mindfulness of yoga. The students performed gracefully including hand gestures and footwork, set to traditional Indian music. The combination of Yoga and Bharatanatyam was a great example of how physical exercise can also be artistic and expressive.
After this riveting performance, the Chief Guest, Deputy Chief Minister Shri Brijesh Pathak awarded all the meritorious who scored above 90% marks in CBSE Board results 2021-22. The Chief Guest, honourable Chief Minister Shri Brijesh Pathak addressed the students, laying emphasis on the need to imbibe qualities of discipline, sportsmanship spirit and to never be disappointed by failure in life. He congratulated the winners for their excellent performances and advised the students to take more interest in sports. His words encouraged the students and instilled gusto among them.
Next in line was the highly energetic and well coordinated display of Chhau Dance. About 36 students from classes VI – VIII using bamboo sticks and swords performed the traditional Chhau dance from Odisha which is a semi-classical Indian dance with martial and folk traditions telling mythological stories via ferocious martial moves. The dancers’ movement with great precision and coordination enraptured the audience and left them spellbound.
The dance made way for the highly awaited third set of Inter House athletic events where competitiveness among the students soared through the roof. The track events that took place were 200 Metre Dash VI – VIII Boys and Girls ,Sack Race Classes III – V Boys and Girls,4 x 50 Metre Relay VI – VIII Boys and Girls, 4 x 50 Metre Dash IX – XII Boys and Girls. The zealous parents, gathered in large numbers, constantly applauded the participants of the Field track events. In Sack Race Classes III – V Boys and Girls the first position went to Aarav Asthana in Boys and Amiya Singh Sengarin Girls. In 4×50 Metre Relay VI – VIII Boys’ and Girls’, the winner was Teresa House. In 4 x 50 Metre Dash IX – XII Boys and Girls category, the winners are Radhakrishnan and Tagore House respectively.
The audience next witnessed the students of class III-V performing an exercise drill ‘Shimmering stars’ using torches and pom-poms. The drills were designed to improve their coordination, flexibility, and overall fitness. The students presented a series of exercises, such as stretches, jumping jacks and formations, using pom-poms and torches. This required the students to use their hand-eye coordination, concentration and flexibility by performing a series of stretches and poses while holding the pom-poms. The use of torches and pom-poms not only showcased the skills of young sports enthusiasts, it also added an element of fun to the drill, making the event enjoyable for the students as well as the audience.
The Tug O’ War is an event which demands brute strength, sheer endurance and excellent team coordination and was definitely the most anticipated event of the day. The event held between the alumni and the present students enraptured the audience as the level of excitement drastically went up pull after pull. Ultimately, the present students bagged the prize.
The excitement reached its climax as the Chief Guest was invited to give away the prizes and felicitate the winners of track events with medals and trophies. The Cock House Trophy wasawarded to Tagore House .
The RadhakrishnanHouse was adjudged the Best House in the March Past.
The most awaited programme, embellishing the event was the ‘Grand Finale’. A robust mind and a lively body is the fundamental requirement to live a long and happy life. With this message in mind, the Mass Display of students from classes IX and XI was held, which aimed to enlighten the audience about the merits of living a fit and healthy life based on the theme of ‘Fit India’. It was a compelling display of talent in which about 100 students participated. Students made line formations and also formed the Football World Cup formation using umbrellas as props. The focus was on coordination and synchronization using music in the background. Interspersing the mass display, students performed a fusion of Indian classical and contemporary dance. About 32 students created different formations and clusters ending with a pyramid. Splattered on the field was a riot of hues and vibrancy. The mass display students and dance students together made a formation of GDGPS upholding the school motto of Higher, Stronger and Brighter. In the end the performers were joined by all the participants on the field bringing the grand event to an end.
After the Grand Finale, Vote of Thanks was proposed by Ms Manika Kochar to all those who had contributed to the event to make it a grand success. The Annual Sports Day ‘Sport-a-Thon’ culminated with the singing of National Anthem.It was a day filled with sportsmanship, enthusiasm and memories to cherish. The Chairman, Mr Sarvesh Goel and the Principal, Dr Prerna Mitra thanked the audience for their cooperation and support and advised children to keep up their sportsman spirit.
