93% of 137 cr trees planted in the last 6 years are still alive; CS. Chief Secretary Durga Shankar Mishra has said that 93% of 137 crore trees planted in Uttar Pradesh in six years, were alive as per research carried out by the Forest Research Institute of India.

He was addressing a gathering after planting a tree at an Amrat Sarovar, in Rasauli village, under the Masauli block of Barabanki, on Saturday.

“The survival rate of trees planted earlier was only 80-90%,” he pointed out.

Mishra further said that the government has targeted increasing the forest coverage from 9.3% at present to 15% in the next five years.

“We have to increase the forest cover to minimize the impact of climate change that poses a serious threat to human survival itself,” he said. “We should not only plant new trees but also save existing ones,” he added. ;
